T.J. Kirkpatrick is an award-winning photojournalist and visual artist who has covered national politics for more than a decade as a regular contributor to The New York Times. His work is included in multiple editions of the American Photography photo annual and has been recognized by CENTER Santa Fe, Photo District News, and NPPA’s Best of Photojournalism. He has exhibited work nationally and internationally, including the School of Visual Arts in New York, Filter Photo Festival in Chicago, and The Lucie Awards’ Best-of-Show. He is currently a member of the inaugural class of New America Us@250 fellows.
His professional and personal work centers on advancing an awareness of the people and environments around us. He slows down to better connect with his surroundings, finding humanizing moments and joy within the ordinary. Ultimately, his work invites viewers to be curious about the world around them and question what they know and believe.
T.J. specializes in nonfiction photography and pursues long-term projects across America. He holds press credentials for the White House and U.S. Congress, and received a degree in journalism from Boston University. He started his career in community newspapers in New England, then shifted to international humanitarian coverage before settling into a mix of personal documentary projects and freelance photojournalism focused on national politics.
